What exactly is International Women’s Day? When is it celebrated? What are its objectives? Is it a time of celebration or some kind of rally or protest?

Brief History

International Women’s Day, also known as IWD, stemmed from a labor movement and thereon became an annual event recognized by the United Nations.

The seeds were planted in 1908, when 15,000 women marched through New York demanding shorter working hours, better pay and the right to vote. A year later, the Socialist Party of America declared the first National Woman’s Day.

International Women’s Day has become a date to celebrate how far women have come in society, politics and in economics.  However, the political origin of this day means strikes and protests which were organized to raise awareness of continued inequality.

Objectives

The theme for this celebration of the IWD on March 8 is, Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow. This is aimed to recognize the contribution of women and girls around the world who are leading the advocacy on climate change adaptation, mitigation and response in order to build a more sustainable future for all.
